Teachers notes

Participation in this project can be at a number of levels.

The most basic approach is to make use of the 1911 census to investigate your immediate locality. Please note, to access the online database for free you must do it via a computer connected to the National Education Network (NEN).

Extending this approach to use a variety of different sources to find evidence for a more complete story of your locality will achieve a higher level of attainment for your pupils.

Using the potential of broadband technologies allows pupils not only to gather information but also publish and share their work by partnering with other schools doing the same sort of local historical study. This approach can make a big difference to pupil motivation and attainment, especially in literacy.
